The Missing Middle

The UK transport industry talks a lot about HGV driver shortages.

We are told there are not enough vocational drivers. That the workforce is shrinking. That demand has outpaced supply. The headlines are familiar, and they are repeated often enough to feel true.

But they are only part of the story.

There are drivers out there. Plenty of them. Since COVID, thousands of people have been funded through Category C and C+E training. Licences have been issued. Tests have been passed. On paper, the shortage should have eased.

Yet many of those newly qualified drivers are struggling to find work.

The reason is simple and rarely acknowledged. They lack experience. And the industry no longer knows how to give it to them.

THIS is the missing middle.

The Forklift Driver I’ll Never Forget

One of the most important modules in the Driver CPC course is also one of the least glamorous. That module is Company Image and the following story illustrates the importance of how a truck driver represents not only him or herself, but also his or her company on a clients site.

This happened in 2016.

At the time, it felt like a completely ordinary working day. One load among many for this particular client. An aluminium smelting plant in Swansea. Nothing memorable, nothing unusual. A forklift driver loaded my truck with freshly smelted aluminium ingots for export, we exchanged the usual workday pleasantries, and I headed back to the port.

I only knew him as Dave.

Welcome to a new era in Transport Training

One of the primary complaints we hear about dCPC training is the fact that it can be carried out be almost anyone who takes the time to jump through the necessary hoops needed to become a DVSA/JAUPT approved CPC trainer.

There is precious little industry experience required. For someone with a bit of tenacity but little to no experience of operating heavy trucks, a 21 year old with three A levels can soon find themselves training a vocational driver who has 30 years behind the wheel. Teaching that driver how to safely operate a truck he has been safely operating for over 30 years and, for us at least, that didn’t sit right.
